OpenAI launches its new improved model: ChatGPT 4o mini
A few weeks ago, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, announced that they were already working on the development of GPT-5, a new language model that will represent a generational leap from GPT-4. GPT-4o Mini a lighter and cheaper version of its most advanced AI model to date, GPT-4o. In May 2024, the OpenAI company responsible for this technology unveiled GPT-4o Mini. GPT-4o the surprising new evolutionary leap. The basis of its technology remains the same, albeit with a new and improved version of GPT. It has applications, but many more capabilities and better internals that add better user interaction and more possibilities.
Normally each new version has a kind of numerical surname marking its growth, and after GPT-3 came GPT-3.5, while in the paid version of ChatGPT they used GPT-4. For free users there is a limited version called GPT-4 or Mini which, while maintaining aspects such as its native multimodality to understand text as well as images or voice, has slightly inferior capabilities.
What are its capabilities?
GPT-4o mini scores 82% in MMLU and greatly improves in chat over GPT-4 in the LMSYS table. It is able to cover lower cost and latency tasks such as apps that chain or parallelize multiple model calls, or interact with clients with fast real-time text responses.
Reasoning: GPT-4o mini is better than other small models in text reasoning and vision tasks. 82.0% in MMLU vs. 77.9% for Gemini Flash and Claude Haiku with 73.8%.
Mathematics and programming: Excels in both subjects, outperforming other small models. In MGSM, GPT-4o scored 87.0%, while Gemini Flash 75.5% and Claude Haiku 71.7%.
Multimodal: High performance on MMMU, a multimodal reasoning test, to score 59.4% compared to 56.1% for Gemini Flash and 50.2% for Claude Haiku.
When will it be available?
GPT-4o mini is available since last week on the free version of ChatGPT and ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers as said by OpenAI. ChatGPT Enterprise users will have the mini version of OpenAI's AI available starting this week.
Not deployed in Spain at the moment GPT-4o mini but it should be in hours or days when it will be, as it happened when GPT-4o was announced in May.
