Apple partners with OpenAI to improve Artificial Intelligence

Apple, known for its focus on control and technological independence, faces a new challenge: its reliance on OpenAI to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) offering. Partnering with Google would have a significant impact on the AI industry. Apple's platform exceeds 2 billion active devices worldwide. It would build on the current online search collaboration between the two companies. The agreement places Chrome as the default search engine on iPhones and other company devices.

A Strategic Alliance

In a context where Apple has fallen behind in the field of generative artificial intelligence, the company has opted for a strategic alliance with OpenAI. This collaboration will enable Apple to offer a cloud-based chatbot, known as "AppleGPT", powered by OpenAI technology. This move is crucial, as Apple does not currently have a model advanced enough to compete with OpenAI's new GPT-4o. The deal sees the development of various features based on artificial intelligence (AI) systems, including a conversational chatbot complementing its own language models to tackle more complex tasks.

Tensions over dependence on OpenAI

The reliance on OpenAI has generated internal tensions at Apple, with some executives showing resistance to this alliance. However, the company recognizes the need to meet market expectations. There were talks with Google to use its Gemini technology, but no agreement was reached, thus consolidating the collaboration with OpenAI.

While the partnership with OpenAI is a temporary solution, Apple has its sights set on developing its own chatbot in the future. This initiative would eliminate reliance on OpenAI. Creating a search engine with built-in artificial intelligence represents a significant challenge, but in the long run, it could reaffirm Apple's technological independence.

Worldwide Developers Conference

Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that his team is working on several generative artificial intelligence applications. The features will be brought to market "later this year," according to the executive. "We will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future. That includes artificial intelligence, where we spend an enormous amount of time and effort."

Apple plans to announce its AI strategy at the upcoming Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), this structure reflects a hybrid approach that seeks to balance local processing and cloud capability.
